How to Prepare Your Chicago Furnace for the Winter

  Winter is when your furnace works the hardest. It’s also the time when you most need the warmth it provides in your house. In order to avoid an unpleasant surprise just when temperatures are dropping, take the following steps now to prepare your furnace for the winter. 1. Check and Change Your Filter Most furnaces have a filter. The filter, located over the intake vent on your furnace, helps to keep dust, dirt, debris and even fur from household pets, out of the furnace mechanism. If the furnace filter gets clogged from all these airborne particles, the intake vent can’t work properly, and your furnace can’t work efficiently. Worse, it may malfunction permanently, causing untold damage and expenses. Locate your furnace filter, remove it, and check the size.
